Genvest analysis
Much of the quarter's balance-sheet growth came from FCNR(B) deposits, the foreign-currency term deposits of non-resident Indians. Period-end deposits rose 11.8% in the quarter and 27.1% from a year earlier; excluding FCNR(B) deposits, they grew 3.1% and 17.0%. Advances grew 30.0% from a year earlier, or 24.1% excluding loans the bank's international branches made against those deposits. The bank says the inflows enlarged its term-deposit base, which is why the average CASA ratio fell to 35.8%.
Net interest margin fell to 4.18% from 4.36% in the June quarter, which had included 8 bps from interest on a tax refund; excluding it, the June margin was 4.28%. Fee income rose 20.1% from a year earlier to ₹7,795 crore, but the treasury made a loss of ₹230 crore, against a gain of ₹220 crore a year earlier, and dividends from subsidiaries fell to ₹463 crore from ₹810 crore. Core operating profit rose 21.8% to ₹20,805 crore.
Profit before tax rose 3.1% from the June quarter, but tax took 24.7% of it, against 22.6%, so net profit was almost flat. Provisions were ₹851 crore, and the bank still holds its ₹13,100 crore contingency provision, unchanged, plus a ₹1,283 crore standard-asset provision made at the RBI's direction on its agricultural priority-sector loans. Gross NPA additions were ₹4,833 crore, recoveries and upgrades ₹3,620 crore, and write-offs ₹1,592 crore. The NPA ratios here are on customer assets, the bank's headline measure.
With the results, the board approved applying to the RBI to continue Pradeep Kumar Sinha as non-executive part-time chairperson from 1 July 2027 to 16 February 2029, within his approved term as an independent director.
