Genvest analysis
Net profit rose from a year earlier mainly because provisions fell to ₹1,694 crore from ₹3,547 crore; the year-ago figure included an additional one-time standard-asset provision of ₹1,231 crore. Against the June quarter, profit dipped as trading income fell to ₹85 crore from ₹537 crore. Core operating profit, which leaves out trading income, was ₹10,998 crore, up 11% from a year earlier. Fee income rose 6% to ₹6,381 crore.
The bank raised ₹1,01,800 crore of FCNR(B) deposits, the foreign-currency term deposits of non-resident Indians. Of that, ₹43,800 crore is backed by loans from its own international branches, which inflates both deposits and advances. Excluding those, deposits grew 17.0% from a year earlier and 2.6% in the quarter, and advances 19.1% and 5.4%. Current and savings accounts made up 36% of period-end deposits, against 40% a year earlier, or 38% excluding the FCNR(B) deposits backed by the bank's loans.
Net interest margin fell to 3.36%; the bank puts it at 3.47% excluding the impact of the FCNR(B) deposits. Operating expenses rose 9% from a year earlier to ₹10,819 crore, including a one-off charge the bank did not size; leaving out that charge and one-time write-backs in the June quarter, the bank puts cost growth from the June quarter at 6%, against 11% as reported.
Gross slippages fell to ₹4,762 crore, from ₹5,566 crore in the June quarter and ₹5,696 crore a year earlier. On top of its NPA provisions, the bank holds ₹15,860 crore of standard and additional provisions, which brings aggregate coverage to 164% of gross NPAs. The common equity tier 1 ratio was 14.61%.
